2007 Timber Rattler Recap
by Chris Mehring
The Voice of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

The 2007 Wisconsin Timber Rattler season finished on Labor Day with a 1-0 win over the Kane County Cougars.  The season ended about the way it should have.  Calvin Beamon scored on the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning by jarring the ball loose from Gustavo Rosendo, the Kane County catcher.  Why would that ending be appropriate?

The Rattlers ended the year with a record of 53-85, one of the poorest records in team history.  But they won nine games at home, including that season ending win over Kane County, in their final at bat.  In a year that saw over 50 players put on a Timber Rattler uniform, the team never developed the consistency that they were looking for, but they were exciting.

Even during a 14-game losing streak near the start of the second half, the team was in almost ever game.  Youth and inexperience kept the team from getting over the hill.

Despite the losses, people kept coming out to Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The Rattlers lost nine home dates to weather.  Snow, cold, and rain all played a part in keeping the team from playing during all points of the season.  In the end, the total attendance was just shy of 200,000, but the average attendance was 3,238.  To compare that with 2006, the total attendance that season was just over 209,000 with an average attendance of 3,216.

There are two common questions members of the front office receive when we go out on speaking engagements.  The first is: What do the players do when the season is over?  A few of the players will participate in an instructional league in Arizona.  One or two may head to play in Hawaii Winter Baseball league.  Most go home to take college courses, work a job, or just work out to get ready for the next season.

The second question we typically get is: What happens at the stadium when the season is over?  We get ready for the next season right away.  We will review things that worked and things that didn't work from the previous season.  Once the schedule is out, we plan out events for the next season.  Then, there is the selling.  Our ticket department gets in touch with season ticket holders.  Our event planning department contacts people who have brought groups out to the ballpark in past seasons.  Our corporate partnership sales department talks with current and future partners about wall signs, program ads, and various other opportunities around the stadium.

In short, we are busy at the stadium year round.

Thank you for supporting the Timber Rattlers in 2007.  We look forward to seeing you again in 2008.
