Lisa Robbins, the Managing
Director of The Miracle League of the Fox Valley,
and Nancy Heykes from Goodwill Industries of North Central
Wisconsin, shared with me the concept of a new baseball
league. The Miracle League of the Fox Valley, a
program of Goodwill NCW, is an organized baseball league for
children ages 4-19 with physical and/or mental disabilities.
The plans are for this league to begin playing next season.
However, for that to happen the League needs your help.
The
League is
planning on constructing
a
custom designed, rubberized field.
The field will provide a level
playing field where children can
learn the game of baseball and
actually play in an organized
league. The rules are
simple-everyone plays, everyone hits
and everyone scores.
The game
ball is a regulation baseball-sized
rubber ball, the kind of ball used
in T-Ball.
To provide assistance and encouragement to the athletes, the Miracle League uses a "buddy" system. Each player will head out to the field with an able bodied buddy. This partnership benefits both the players and the buddies, creating a bond and friendship between player and buddy; and the love of baseball for all involved. The field will be located in Appleton's Memorial Park, already home to many different baseball and softball leagues for all ages. The goal is to have the field completed for the 2010 summer baseball season. In order for this to happen, the Miracle League needs you to get involved. The group needs to raise $506,000 to build the facilities that will be used by the Miracle League Organization. The group will work in three phases: Phase 1: Construction of a rubberized, custom baseball field Phase 2: Construction of accessible playground Phase 3: Construction of concession stand and restroom facilities. Please join my family and The Inside Scoop in supporting this great cause. Check out their Web site for more information at http://foxcitiesmiracleleague.webs.com/.
