Obama's Forceful Response by Rick Sense and John Gard
Here’s
one from today’s news that causes us to wonder about the POTUS’
understanding of Intro to Government 101.
Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the Majority on today’s SCOTUS ruling, stated, “When government seeks to use its full power, including the criminal law, to command where a person may get his or her information or what distrusted source he or she may not hear, it uses censorship to control thought. This is unlawful. The First Amendment confirms the freedom to think for ourselves.” (from page 47 of today's ruling) Later in the day President Obama issued a statement opposing the decision. As the Washington Post reports: “With its ruling today, the Supreme Court has given a green light to a new stampede of special interest money in our politics. It is a major victory for big oil, Wall Street banks, health insurance companies and the other powerful interests that marshal their power every day in Washington to drown out the voices of everyday Americans. … We are going to talk with bipartisan congressional leaders to develop a forceful response to this decision.” So…let us get this straight, the President is preparing a “forceful response” (his words) to the First Amendment? Looks like some pretty angry constituencies just got the green light to spend a whole lot of money in the 2010 mid-terms. If only he was as concerned about a forceful response to the terrorist who is being tried in the U.S. court system. That is what we need a forceful response to-oh wait a minute-we had one, this past Tuesday.
