Welcome to The Inside Scoop’s 2nd Annual
Political Prognosticators World Series

In continuing the great tradition of mixing politics and baseball this year’s competiton will again pit women and men who work, dabble or are interested in politics against each other on the diamond.  Check back at the All-Star break for an update.

This year’s players are:

Ellen Nowak (EN), served as John’s Gard’s legal counsel and chief of staff when he was Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly.  She is now helping John in his effort to win the Wisconsin 8th Congressional District.

Greg Guibord (GG), baseball fan and Facilities expert for an area credit union.

Senator Ted Kanavas (TK), Ted represents the Brookfield area in the Wisconsin State Senate and is active in youth baseball.

Ryan Eddy (RE),  the Policy Advisor to the Director of the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, Department of Homeland Security and former White House staffer.    Ryan was 50% correct on all 30 picks last season.

John Gard (JG), probable 8th Congressional District Candidate, former Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly and current contributor to The Inside Scoop.

Brandon Rosner (BR), was the campaign chairman of the Gard for Congress campaign in 2006.  Brandon continues his quest to visit every Major League Baseball park.  Last year he crossed the halfway mark. This year’s planned visits include viewing games in Boston (Fenway Park), LA (Dodger Stadium), San Diego (Petco Park), Chicago (US Cellular Field), Cincinnati (Great American Ballpark), and Tampa Bay (Tropicana Field).  When Brandon isn’t at Spring Training or scoring along games in Section 206 at Miller Park, he can be found serving as his company’s official unpaid professional baseball analyst during the day.

Dave Hutchison (DH), former Wisconsin State Assembly Representative from Wisconsin’s 1st Assembly district

Dan Romportl (DR), Since graduating from UW-La Crosse in 2006, Dan has held several positions in Republican politics.  His most recent position was working for Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign in Iowa and South Carolina.

Juan Manigault (JM), Republican candidate for Mayor of South Bend, Indiana in 2007 and South Bend Silver Hawks fan

Alejo Torres (AT), biggest Yankees fan outside of New York, he grew up playing and loving the game.  Alejo was fortunate enough to play four years of college ball and still plays in summer leagues in Chicago.  He’s married with one child, and lives in downtown Chicago and he works for the Federal Reserve.

Craig Dickman (CD), a lifelong baseball fan and current Chairman of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.  He became a Cub Fan in 1968 and has maintained a passionate dislike of the Mets ever since.  Now an emerging Brewer Fan, he will be cheering for Wisconsin baseball!  In his day-job, Craig is CEO of Breakthrough Fuel, a company focused on reducing the fuel costs, consumption and emissions associated with transporting goods to market.

Rick Sense (RS), life-long Appleton Foxes-Wisconsin Timber Rattlers fan and editor of The Inside Scoop.

Brad Robinson (BradR), last year’s champ, resident Scoop football expert and resident of Valparaiso, Indiana.

Tyler Vorpagel (TV), life-long Milwaukee Brewer fan.  Former Chairman of the UWGB College Republicans and Campus Coordinator for Gard for Congress.  Currently Staff Assistant to Congressman Tom Petri in Fond du Lac Office.

Commentary from Dan Romportl:

Although there are several young teams that could be annual contenders someday (Arizona, Milwaukee, Colorado, Detroit), in 2008 I have to give the nod to two veteran clubs that know how to win.  Looking to move on after their monumental collapse last season, the Mets acquired Johan Santana, arguably the best pitcher in the majors.  Boston will be tough to beat in the AL again, and the Crew will finally win the division as long as Ben Sheets stays off the DL.
